Herb Of The Month!
As we rediscover the value of herbs for healthy healing, one of the best health investments is a basic herbal medicine chest kit, so that useful remedies will be on hand when you need them. An herbal first aid kit is a safe way to cope with everyday healing problems, and temporary or non-serious health conditions. It can handle many problems immediately and simply save you hundreds of dollars in doctor bills, and keep you from a traumatic, time consuming visit to a medical clinic. The choices in the following kit are easy to use, inexpensive, gentle enough for children and effective for adults.
*For colds, flu and chest congestion: elder/yarrow/peppermint tea for sniffles; mullein oil for earaches, lavender or eucalyptus steams or hot ginger compresses for chest congestion, a Echinacea/golden seal/ myrrh combination as a natural antibiotic.
*For coughs, sore throats: loquat syrup or licorice/wild/slippery elm tea for coughs, zinc source herbal extract for sore throat, herbal throat drops, aloe vera juice or tea tree oil gargle.
*For Burns: aloe vera gel, calendula gel, pau d'arco gel, tea tree oil. comfrey root/ wheat germ oil/ honey compress, St. John's wort oil, dip cotton balls in strong fresh ginger juice or strong black tea and apply.
*For allergies: bee pollen granules ( begin with small doses and gradually increase to about 1 teaspoon), ginkgo biloba (helps inactivate allergens). Antioxidants are a key: consider grape seed extract, quercetin with bromelain, CoQ10,, Ester C powered with bioflavonoids.)
*For cold/canker sores: L-lysine; dumontlaceae, a red marine algae, an immunomodulatory and antiviral agent works topically as well as internally in controlling and reducing herbs simples virus populations; aloe vera, an antiviral soothes and dries out sores, and promotes healing; peppermint oil and lemon balm are antiviral against herpes.
*For Immune support and to rebuilt the system from illness: panax ginseng, Echinacea, ashwagandha, Siberian ginseng, licorice root, astragalus's, ligustrum, goldenseal, ginger, codonopsis, suma, yellow dock, dandelion, cayenne, aloe vera, propolis and immune-enhancing mushrooms (reishi, maltake, and shiitake).
*For cuts, wounds, scrapes, and scars: ginseng skin repair gel, par d' arco/calendula a gel, witch hazel compresses, comfrey/aloe salve, also very gel, Deva Flowers First Aid Remedy extract, tea tree oil.
*For Fungal Infections like athlete's foot, ringworm and nail fungus: tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, black walnut extract, golden seal/ myrrh solution, pau d'arco/dandelion/ gentian gel.
*For parasite infections (intestinal worms, amoebic dysentery, glardia): black walnut hulls or pau d'arco/ Echinacea extract, and cayenne/garlic caps after every meal for 2 weeks. Effective vermifuge herbs include myrrh, valerian, una da gato extracts, barberry tea, Goldenseal caps work especially for glardia.
*For minor bacterial and viral infections: Echinacea/goldenseal/myrrh combination, white pine/bayberry capsules for first aid; osha root tea, usnea extract, St. John's wort/lomatlum extract.
*For rashes, itching, swelling, from insect bites or other histamine reactions: antihistamine marshmallow/bee pollen/white pine capsules, calendual/par d'arco gel, comfrey/plantain ointment, tea tree oil, aloe vera gel, Echinacea/St. John's wort/ white willow capsules.
*For pain, cramping and headache relief: lavender compresses, black cohosh/skullcap extract, pepper- mint oil rubs, comfrey compresses, rosemary tea or steam, ginkgo biloba or feverfew extract.
These are just a few of the items I keep in my medicine chest. Next month with the coming of cold and flu season, I will share the rest of my cabinet with you.
