Perceptions:

The Heroic Tradition

There is not one unified Heroic Tradition, but many similar traditions known collectively as the Heroic tradition.

In this tradition, each persona has a body, a mind, and a spirit/soul.  These three parts make a complete person.  Completeness and balance are evoked by the symbol of the heroic tradition: the circle.  The three parts are not equal: the spirit is high and worthy; the body is low and gross; the mind is in between.

Health itself (typified by a youthful white male) is a delicate balance and a constant struggle: good against bad, light against dark, clean against dirty.

Well-being in this tradition depends on balance and clarity, which requires disciplining the body and the mind.  Guidelines and rules (often strict) for keeping physical and emotional desires in balance are a constant of all heroic traditions, though the exact rules for correct conduct and correct eating vary from one type of Heroic tradition to another.  What all Heroic authors and healers agree on is the absolute need for rules.

"Follow the rules or suffer the consequences."  You cause your own consequences in this tradition.  If you have a problem, you caused it.  The cure: acknowledge your guilt, ask forgiveness, repent, and accept your deserved punishment.

Today many practitioners of alternative medicine and holistic health thing in the Heroic ways.  Herbal medicine especially is taught and practiced by Heroic tradition guidelines.  Most of the world's major religions are strongly Heroic as well.

The Circle is the Symbol of the Heroic Tradition

This tradition sees health as a balance between the pulls of spirit and matter.   This balance is a cycle; a cycle of struggle between good and bad, right and wrong, dark and light.  The cycle of this struggle endlessly repeats.  It is a serpent swallowing its own tail.  It is a circle.

The circle is entire unto itself; complete and whole.  The circle is predictable, repeatable, reliable.  The circle is a closed system.  The circle is eternal.  The circle is the halo, the pure light of the soul.  The circle has no beginning and no end. The circle is not born and the circle never dies.  The circle goes around and around, always in balance, always predictable.

The circle is a whole being.  And each part of the whole Heroic being is also a circle:  Three circles interlaced, interlocked in struggle: the soul circle striving higher, the body circle pulling us down, and the mind circle trying to keep the balance between. Life is a continuous circle, a meeting of time and place, from one realm to the next.  If we pay attention to ourselves and our inner voices, the journey of this tradition can be truly amazing!
